A modern and sustainably designed educational environment for students and researchers is being created at the Albano campus, the former industrial area in the northern part of downtown Stockholm. Here, a completely new university campus is being developed that institutionally and socially connects Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). The building client is the company Akademiska Hus, which constructs educational and research facilities on behalf of the Swedish government, and the municipal housing company Svenska Bostäder. On a planned usable area of approximately 70,000 m², four buildings for teaching and research will be constructed. Restaurants, cafés, and shops are also being established on the site and are easily accessible from lecture halls, seminar rooms, learning spaces, and dormitories. The Albano campus is part of a project aiming to unite the city’s universities in the northern part of Stockholm. 

„The ATK 601 spacer system ‚bridges‘ large insulation thicknesses, represents a significantly lower thermal bridge than conventional wall bracket solutions, and safely transfers loads to the supporting wall“, explains Stefan Schrag, Market Manager at fischer BWM Facade Systems, about the advantages of the system. „This allows high energy requirements for the entire construction to be combined with secure support.“ The certificate „Passive House suitable component“ from the Passive House Institute documents the increased energy efficiency of the ATK 601 load-bearing structure compared to conventional, market-standard wall constructions.

The construction of the Albano Campus focuses simultaneously on the preservation and further development of biological diversity. To supply the campus, energy is also generated from about 100 boreholes approximately 350 m deep on the site and converted into warm and cold air for heating and cooling the buildings using reversible heat pumps. Green spaces, a system for wastewater treatment and return to Lake Brunnsviken, green roofs, photovoltaic systems, as well as infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus drivers additionally increase sustainability. The facades combine thermal insulation according to current energy requirements with functionality and a representative appearance, whose radiance extends over the entire area and further surroundings.
