Around 26 million passengers departed and landed here in 2019: KKIA in Riyadh is the second largest airport in Saudi Arabia by passenger numbers. The airport was completed in 1983. Unusual are its 375 square kilometer area, of which currently only about a quarter is used, as well as the control tower, which at 81 meters is one of the tallest in the world. The current renovation work can be carried out during ongoing operations in various phases. The goal of the project is to expand KKIA's passenger capacities, including a new 5th terminal, and to improve services.

Safety when it counts

Product solutions from fastening specialist fischer are used in the renovation of Terminals 3 and 4, each seven stories high. "We are pleased that our fischer FireStop solutions are installed as an important safety precaution at KKIA," says Constantin Wiegert, Head of Facade and Fire Protection Systems at fischer. "After the new construction of Istanbul Airport, the renovation and expansion of KKIA is the next major airport project in a short time frame for which we are implementing passive fire protection. The reasons lie in the fact that we offer the appropriate product and service solutions from a single source, collaborate successfully with our specialist partners, and combine our central know-how with the expertise of our local subsidiaries on site, creating further closeness to customers and markets."

 All installation openings for MEP applications (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing works) and construction joints are safely sealed at KKIA with fischer FireStop solutions. The installed products include the fischer firestop FiAM. When this one-component, water-based acrylic emulsion is exposed to fire, it forms a highly insulating barrier. This allows the product to provide up to five hours of compartmentalization. Also installed was the universally applicable fischer fire protection sealant UFS 310. When exposed to fire, it expands to many times its volume. Subsequently, the UFS 310 cures to form an elastic, flexible fire seal. It achieves up to four hours of fire resistance. For numerous fastening tasks in concrete, the fischer steel anchors FAZ II, EA II, and FZEA II are also used.

The heavy pipe installations are supported by the fischer heavy-duty system FMS. Compared to a conventional steel construction, the FMS system offers decisive advantages in terms of assembly. The hot-dip galvanized profiles are cut to size on site and permanently and securely screwed together with angles. This eliminates the elaborate welding of steel constructions and the application of corrosion protection on site, and the assembly time is significantly reduced – which leads to lower costs.
