Secure hold for longest bridge over the sea

fischer heavy-duty fasteners installed in Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge

Secure hold for longest bridge over the sea
New record construction in China: In October 2018, the Middle Kingdom opened the longest bridge in the world over the sea after nine years of construction, and currently the largest infrastructure project on the water. The century-old structure spans about 55 kilometers across the Pearl River Delta, connecting the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau with the province of Guangdong (city of Zhuhai) on the mainland. Chemical and mechanical fastening systems from fischer secure several buildings on the artificial island Zhuhai Port.
By crossing over water, China optimizes mobility, exchange, and goods transportation between the three largest cities in the Pearl River Delta. The bridge winds from the former British colony Hong Kong in the east to the mainland Chinese Guangdong in the west, and to the adjacent former Portuguese colony Macau. It spans 35 kilometers over the water. The remaining distance is distributed over a 6.7-kilometer tunnel that reaches up to 48 m deep under the seabed, and parts that run over artificial islands and mainland. The 22.9 km main bridge and the tunnel in the western part of the structure measure about 29.6 km. The bridge has three lanes in each direction. The Pearl River Delta is partly only about 20 meters deep, which is why prefabricated stilts were used in large parts. The underwater tunnel section and three locations of the cable-stayed bridge allow ship passage.

fischer was mainly involved at the site of the artificial island Zhuhai Port in the project. Among other things, chemical anchoring systems, such as the Superbond system with the RSB reaction cartridge and the high-strength epoxy resin mortar FIS EM Plus 390 S with system components, were installed there. Additionally used was the fischer Zykon undercut anchor FZA.
The high-strength epoxy resin mortar FIS EM Plus 390 S for reinforcement connections and high load values in concrete is, for example, ideal for the difficult operating conditions in the coastal marine region, where the structure is exposed to high humidity and high temperatures as well as possible corrosion from salt-containing sea mist. To ensure its functionality in such environments, the injection mortar was extensively tested. Thus, the FIS EM Plus 390 S demonstrated its durability in moisture, temperature, aging and long-term load tests as well as corrosion testing through media.
The strength, safety, and durability of the fastenings are ensured by fischer fastening solutions. The ease of use of the products, which require hardly any tools for installation, was also an advantage given the challenging location of the construction site on the artificial island.

Throughout all project phases, fischer supported the customer with customized anchoring concepts and processes for all usage requirements – from preliminary planning through product selection to on-site testing and construction execution.
